CSL DNA authentication: halal cosmetics tested for porcine DNA and botanical identity

Bioscience · DNA authentication

Know what is really in your ingredients.

CSL scientists use real-time PCR and DNA sequencing at the Guires R&D Innovation Centre to screen for porcine DNA, confirm botanical identity and check GMO status, giving halal certifiers and brands proof, not just paperwork.

Guires Cosmetic Science Lab

Halal DNA Testing from Guires CSL

At Guires Cosmetic Science Lab, CSL scientists run halal DNA testing for cosmetics and ingredients at the Guires R&D Innovation Centre, using real-time PCR to screen for porcine DNA, plus botanical DNA authentication and GMO screening, so certifiers and brands have laboratory proof.

What's included

The work, in detail.

Porcine DNA screening for halal

Real-time PCR screening of raw materials and finished products for pig-derived DNA, supporting halal certification in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Gulf.

Real-time PCRHalal

Botanical identity

DNA checks that a plant ingredient is the species stated, catching substitution and adulteration.

DNA barcodingSequencing

GMO screening

Screening of plant-derived ingredients for common genetic-modification markers.

GMO markers

Animal-origin checks

Screening for other animal-derived material in ingredients sold as plant-based or vegan.

VeganPlant-based

How it runs

Step by step.

  1. SampleRaw material or product received
  2. ExtractDNA extracted and quality checked
  3. TestPCR or sequencing against target species
  4. ReportResults and interpretation

Results from the Guires R&D Innovation Centre support formulation decisions, ingredient selection and claims development. Where a market or retailer needs regulatory-grade data, such as GLP safety studies or accredited test reports, CSL arranges those studies as part of the project.

Questions

Asked before we start.

Does a negative result prove a product is halal?

It shows no porcine DNA was detected at the method’s sensitivity. Halal certification also depends on sourcing, processing and documentation, which CSL helps prepare.

Can DNA tests be run on finished creams?

Often, yes, but heavily processed ingredients may contain little intact DNA. For those, testing the raw materials is more reliable.

Which certifiers accept this data?

Certifiers set their own requirements. The data supports the certification file, and CSL can arrange testing at a laboratory a specific certifier recognises.
