Guires Cosmetic Science Lab

Hyperpigmentation Serum Formulations from Guires CSL

At Guires Cosmetic Science Lab, CSL formulation chemists develop hyperpigmentation serum formulations and even-tone treatments with niacinamide, tranexamic acid and vitamin C, with results proven by chromameter, standardised imaging and expert grading across skin tones. With more than 10 years of experience, the team develops formulas that visibly reduce dark spots and uneven tone using an evidence-based approach.

What shoppers look for now

01Every skin tone

Dark spots and uneven tone matter across all skin tones, and shoppers expect products tested on skin like theirs.

02Safe actives

Shoppers avoid harsh bleaching agents and look for gentle, well-studied brightening actives.

03Protection too

Sun and visible light keep pigmentation coming back, so treatment and protection go together.

The science

How pigmentation forms, and how we target it.

Pigment is made in melanocytes, transferred to skin cells and triggered by UV and visible light. We work at each step.

Pigment production & transfer

Fewer dark spots, more even tone.

Niacinamide reduces the transfer of pigment to skin cells, and vitamin C interrupts pigment production. Both have vehicle-controlled trials showing visible improvement in spots and tone.

How CSL proves it works

  • ChromameterColour measurement of spots vs surrounding skin
  • ImagingStandardised photography and spot analysis
  • Expert gradingPigmentation scales over 8–12 weeks

UV & visible light

Stop it coming back.

Visible light, not only UV, drives pigmentation in deeper skin tones. Randomised trials show tinted sunscreens with iron oxides improve melasma and reduce relapse compared with UV-only sunscreens.

Clinical evidence

What the published trials show.

Peer-reviewed human studies behind the actives and approaches on this page. Each links to its record.

These are published studies on ingredients, methods and routines, not on products we have made. A finished product needs its own testing before a claim goes on pack, and we design that study with you. See the full evidence library

Cosmetic or drug?

Several depigmenting agents, such as hydroquinone, are banned in cosmetics in the EU and restricted elsewhere. We build even-tone products on actives permitted in each market.

FAQ

Hyperpigmentation & even tone questions.

Can we claim skin lightening?

We avoid “lightening” or “whitening”, which can suggest bleaching and are restricted in some markets. “Fades the look of dark spots” and “more even-looking tone” are supportable.

Is hydroquinone allowed?

Not in EU cosmetics, and it is restricted elsewhere. We build even-tone products on actives permitted in each market.

How long does an even-tone study take?

Usually 8 to 12 weeks, with colour measurement and imaging on panels that include the skin tones you sell to.

Who owns the formula?

You do. We sign an NDA before you share your brief, and the formula and technical file are handed over at the end of the project.
