Guires Cosmetic Science Lab

Hair fall and hair growth formulations from Guires CSL

At Guires Cosmetic Science Lab, CSL formulation chemists develop hair fall shampoos, scalp serums and nutricosmetics for thinning hair, with results proven by phototrichogram, hair-pull and wash-count studies. With more than 10 years of experience, the team develops products for fuller-looking hair and less hair fall due to breakage, with claims worded correctly for each market.

What shoppers look for now

01Emotional concern

Thinning hair is one of the most emotional beauty concerns for both women and men.

02Visible density

Shoppers want fuller-looking hair and less shedding they can see in the brush.

03Inside and out

Topical serums and oral supplements are increasingly used together.

The science

What drives hair fall, and what cosmetics can do.

Hair fall comes from breakage along the fibre and from changes in the growth cycle. Cosmetics can address breakage, shedding and the look of density; regrowth belongs to medicines.

Topical care

Denser-looking hair, from the scalp.

Caffeine and rosemary have performed comparably to minoxidil in randomised comparative trials, and piroctone olamine increased hair amount vs placebo. We formulate light scalp serums and shampoos around them.

Nutricosmetics

Support from within.

Oral marine-protein and pumpkin seed oil supplements increased hair counts vs placebo in randomised, double-blind trials. Through our group we develop supplements alongside topical products.

Randomised controlled trialHair density · caffeine

0.2% caffeine liquid vs 5% minoxidil

Randomised, open-label, multicentre non-inferiority · 210 men · 6 months

Proportion of hairs in the growth phase rose 10.6% with caffeine vs 11.7% with minoxidil, meeting the non-inferiority margin.

Minoxidil is a medicine; it appears here only as the comparator.

Dhurat R et al. Skin Pharmacol Physiol 2017;30(6):298–305 · PMID 29055953

Randomised controlled trialHair density · rosemary oil

Rosemary oil vs 2% minoxidil

Randomised comparative trial · 100 men · 6 months

Hair count rose significantly in both groups with no difference between them; scalp itching was less frequent with rosemary.

Active-comparator trial, not placebo-controlled.

Panahi Y et al. Skinmed 2015;13(1):15–21 · PMID 25842469

Randomised controlled trialThinning hair · marine protein

Oral marine-protein supplement vs placebo

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled · 60 women · 90 days

Terminal hair count increased significantly vs placebo (P<0.0001), with less shedding and better self-assessed quality of life.

Oral supplement (nutricosmetic).

Cosmetic or drug?

Regrowth claims, and actives such as minoxidil, make a product a medicine in most markets. Cosmetic claims focus on breakage, thickness and appearance.

FAQ

Hair fall & hair growth questions.

Can a cosmetic claim to regrow hair?

No. Regrowth and alopecia claims are medicinal in most markets. Cosmetic claims cover breakage, shedding and the look of density.

How long does a hair-fall study take?

Usually 12 to 24 weeks, because the growth cycle is slow.

Can you develop supplements too?

Yes, through our group’s food and nutraceutical team, with the right regulatory route.

Who owns the formula?

You do. We sign an NDA before you share your brief, and the formula and technical file are handed over at the end of the project.
